Solar Hot Water Rebates
As an incentive to create a lighter carbon footprint there are quite a few solar hot water rebates available to help you make the switch without costing you a fortune. Below are a list of the available rebates and some information on eligibility.

QLD Government Solar Hot Water Rebates
In order to assist with the cost of installing an environmental hot water system, the QLD Government is now offering a rebate of $600 (or $1,000 for low income earners) when replacing an electric storage water heater with a heat pump or solar water heater. The main eligibility criteria are as follows: Key Eligibility Criteria – $600 Rebate
- The new system must be purchased on or after the 13th of April 2010 (please note that payments will not commence until after 1st of July 2010).
- Be a solar or heat pump hot water system eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS)
- Replace an existing electric storage hot water system in a principle place of residence
- Be installed by licenses parties (current BSA and occupational licenses)
Key Eligibility Criteria – Low Income Earner $1000 Rebate To qualify for the $1,000 rebate, the applicant must meet all the $600 rebate eligibility conditions as well as hold one of the pension cards listed below (must be a current and valid card):
- Centrelink Pension Concession Card
- Centrelink Low-Income Health Care Card
- Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensions Concession Card (Blue only. Orange, white and gold cardholders are not eligible)
This low income earner/pensioner rebate can only be applied for once. Please also note that the $600 rebate and the $1,000 rebate cannot both be claimed for the same installation. Submitting an application form does not guarantee eligibility. Upon receipt of a completed rebate application form, the QLD Government will assess the application against the eligibility criteria before making any payment. The QLD Government may also request further information from the applicant before the rebate is paid. STC's – Small-Scale Technology Certificates
Each solar hot water heater has been assigned an STC value and each credit represents a saving of one megawatt of electricity generated from fossil fuels over 10 years. Once you have had an eligible solar hot water system install, you can assign the STC's to a registered agent in exchange for reimbursement. The unit price of STC's is variable, historically the range anywhere from $15.00 to $40.00. Eligibility:
- Hot water system must be installed before they can create STC's
- You must be the owner of the system at the time of installation
- STC's must be registered within 12 months of the installation date of the hot water system.
